( i decided to go with 2! also thought of a modern-day royalty au, but kept it super vague and open-ended on purpose. :)

there is no romance that can bloom from the union of a sacrificial lamb and a lion. of this, jihyun is certain, even as she smiles softly at her chosen across the table. there are no others around to witness their interactions, but she finds it impossible to let down her guards even now; what's the point of vulnerability when her bride looks soft and willowy and -- and sweet. too sweet, with a beauty that speaks of innocence rather than rigorous upbringings. there's a file on this woman, im jinah, but it's still strewn carelessly across her desk, left untouched in favor of more important, pressing matters. it's almost impossible to believe that this girl is part of the group that's been giving them so much trouble, and while jihyun would normally prefer to give the benefit of the doubt to her own sex, she finds it's beyond her strength today.

perhaps this arranged marriage is affecting her more than she's previously thought.

everything good for the family goes, it's how jihyun's lived her entire life, but she studies the pretty features and wonders if she'll ever feel a flare of affection, a low simmering desire of lust, or even an ounce of pride, or familial bond. she's always held a secret hope that the individual she marries will be someone strong, equally matched in ambition and ability to rule their people together, expand borders and reach greater achievements than dynasties before them... what is she supposed to do with a trophy wife? will jinah be easily bribed by riches from spies that seek to topple her own climb to power? or so spoiled that jihyun is saddled with a child for a wife for the rest of her days?

"tell me about yourself, please?" she says, still wearing a solid veneer of interest as she reaches for her wine instead of rubbing her headache away like she wants. the whole contents of the glass disappear in a few seconds, and still, jihyun tastes nothing. "i've read about you, of course, but i'd rather learn about you from you."

it's almost comical to jinah that she would be sitting in the middle of a jeon owned property the next morning after her father said that the negotiations had gone through. and that was it. she tried to suppress a bitter laugh at the realization that she would be a jeon property too, more or less. maybe her brother was right, she shouldn't have slaved away in university and graduate schoolㅡ those things could have been bought by money. but jinah was stubborn. maybe if she worked hard, she wouldn't be doing things she didn't want to. at least the interior of the jeon office didn't look as clinical as she expected them to be. the political parties had been a mess for as long as she could remember but after the economic decline a few decades ago, a unification had been called for.

at the seat of power is the jeon, with the ims a few seats behind. jinah was raised in a life of privilege, perhaps sheltered, but the 6 years of freedom she had (or was it a delusion?) was something she couldn't let go. in front of her was a file with everything about her. was her accomplishments in research listed there? or only the part about her brief affair with the barista at the university café that was sensationalized by her father's enemies through the media?

either way, she couldn't read jeon jihyun's face. the wine glasses between them did nothing to make her lose the tension on her shoulders and jinah had been itching to take a long swig of her own too. but perhaps it would send the wrong message. "i take it you're not into astrological signs? i wouldn't start there." she spares the folder another glance and she sighs. "jihyun-ssi, this... this feels like the inevitable at this point. if you wish to get to know me, perhaps interviewing me like a person lined up for promotion is something i won't recommend. if you have free time, or if the security permits, perhaps i could show you around my campus? it's where i work."

he'll be the first to admit not knowing very much about her.

most people view bae suji as one would a distant star; that is, someone who isn't even in the same solar system. mark has a healthy amount of respect for the idol-turned-actress, but even when they were under the same label they didn't interact with each other much outside of work. to be on a Marriage Reality with her now is... weird, for lack of a better term. at least it's most definitely awkward. are these shows ever not?

but here he waits, bouquet of flowers in hand, a bank of cameras parked across the street. the idea that every move he's making is being recorded makes mark want to stop shuffling uselessly, though he dips right back into the habit when the thought inevitably fades from his mind. the little first mission envelope had said to meet his "new wife" outside this garden restaurant in itaewon: it's a cute little place with a french name he can't pronounce that's leaned full-tilt into its chosen parisian theme. mark is dressed for success in clothes he would never choose to step out in himself -- these clean tailored lines feel tight in places and loose in others, like they should belong to some other man despite fitting him perfectly. despite fitting him perfectly, he can't stop reaching for his collar, loosening it a couple of centimeters before it snaps back into place.

at least the network editors are going to have a field day with his footage. don't look at the cameras, don't look at the cameras, is a ditty he keeps repeating to himself, as he shifts his weight from one foot to the other. don't think about how you're registering, just chill.

despite being put under the spotlight at a young age, there's always getting used to when you have three to four cameras on you, catching every angle and every action that would be open to the editor's interpretation at post production. that doesn't make suji happy at all. she had spent years choosing what she only puts out there, be it in interviews or her instagram.

the company decided this was a good break, a good opportunity to market their artists' flexibility and relatibility. she isn't at the point of her career where she can say no and so here she is, in a dress specifically picked for their first meeting. the café is empty, rented out for the day and the fifth camera sits on the table, angled close to her face. suji peers down, fixes her hair out of habit and smiles nervously.

are you ready to meet your husband? the pd asks from behind the scenes, prompting that the shoot is starting.

"no one is truly prepared for the married life," she answers, cheeky and cheerful. she knows who it is, but for the sake of the plot, she's been briefed to look surprised. she's been told to go out the door by the time she hears another slate go off. suji stands and pushes the door of the café open, a dimpled smile on her face as she sights an equally nervous yien.

"ah," she exclaims, the familiarity giving her a sense of comfort. she doesn't know him that much despite being in the same company but it would look bad if they had conveyed that on camera. they were supposed to feel like family. she raises her hands in an attempt for a high five but seeing as how his hands are full, she drops them, chuckling as if embarrassed and does a bow instead. "should weㅡ should we introduce ourselves?" she jokes, eyes curving into crescents. "they didn't make you do any weird challenges to get here, right?"
